The mill workers' cottages were demolished in the 1930s. The mill boasted the second largest waterwheel in the country and was first used to grind down the surface of stones from the nearby quarry to produce paving stones, some of which are supposed to have been transported by packhorse by Thomas Pickford (of removals fame) to pave London's Regent Street.

It was later used to grind down a locally mined mineral to produce a chemical used in the manufacture of paint - which is why the caption calls it an old paint mill. Click here for more on Goytsclough Mill.
