At 11 miles, this is one of the longest walks featured on the website. But the views from both Windgather Rocks and then the Tors make it well worth the effort.

The walk starts from the main car park between the twin reservoirs and then heads north along the west bank of Fernilee, before crossing the Goyt and visiting the picturesque hamlet of taxal with its historic church.

There’s a steepish climb up to Taxal Edge but it’s fairly easy going from there up to Windgather Rocks – which make a perfect spot to rest awhile and take in the fantastic panorama.

And then on to the Tors – first Cats and then Shining – with views over to Shutlingsloe – known as the Cheshire Matterhorn because of its distinctive shape – on the far horizon.

The route then heads back towards Errwood Reservoir, taking in a scenic detour to visit the ruins off Errwood Hall. For full step-by-step instructions and photos, as well as a Relive video and ViewRanger map, click the link below.
