At nearly 12 miles, this is one of the longest walks in the series, and probably the most challenging if you’re not a keen walker. But the rewards include a rich variety of features and scenery.
From Fernilee Reservoir, the walk passes Taxal and then Combs Reservoir, before climbing up to the Iron Age fort of Castle Naze, high on Combs Moss, to enjoy some wonderful panoramic views.
The Beehive pub in Combs is highly recommended. The track along Combs Edge is fairly narrow in places, and can get overgrown and muddy from late summer, so walking shoes or boots are recommended.
A detailed, step-by-step description and map of this walk are available to download for just £1.85. A walking app GPX file is also available at £1.50. Save on both for just £2.95. All proceeds help cover the hosting costs of this website.
