A 1.6-mile circular walk from a small layby on The Street, the old Roman road – perfect for a quick leg-stretch away from the busier paths around the twin reservoirs.
The layby only has room for four or five cars. If it’s full, carry on up to Pym Chair car park, or drop back down to The Street car park and walk back up to the start.
There are wonderful panoramic views from Foxlow Edge across the Goyt Valley, with Errwood Reservoir below. On the far horizon, the ridge known as The Tors runs from Pym Chair to Shining Tor.
St Joseph’s Shrine
The return passes the ruins of Withinleach Farm, last occupied in 1835, before reaching St Joseph’s Shrine. A plaque inside bears the initials D de Y and the date 1889, in memory of Dolores de Ybarguen, the Spanish companion of Mrs Jessie Grimshawe.
It’s a beautifully peaceful spot to rest awhile. The coloured tiles of St Joseph carrying the infant Jesus were sadly vandalised some years ago, but walkers still leave prayers and offerings.
You can easily extend the walk to visit the ruins of Errwood Hall and the Grimshawe graves – see the orange dashes on the pdf map.
