Michael Mitchell writes: My 2x great grandmother was Elizabeth Carter and was born at Errwood Hall 18 Jun 1862. Her father was John Carter who was a butler at the hall in the 1850s. In the 1860 census he is listed as a retired butler, but still living on the property. In 1871 he is living in Castedge and is listed as the farm bailiff.
I am still trying to find more history with this family listed to include photos, but to date have been unable to locate them. Thank you for having this site and if I come across anything useful I will share it with you.
Thanks Michael. I’m glad you enjoy the site. If anyone can help Michael with photos or information, please send a message, and I’ll forward it on to him.
Mike Wibberley has sent this information: I am replying to a request for information concerning John Carter in your guest book. I have found a John Carter in the 1861 & 1871 Census returns. He was born in 1815 in Kirby Hill Yorkshire and is shown as a retired butler in 1861 living with his wife Elizabeth at 2, Goyts Bridge, Taxal. In 1871 he is shown as a farm bailiff with his wife and 3 daughters, all born at Taxal. The original 1871 census return shows the occupants of various places around the Goyt Valley such as, servants at Erwood Hall, farmers at Goyts Moss, & Old Moss House, Goyts Clough & Castage Cottage.
